The Importance of Tiny Daily Disciplines
I recently joined a new Bible study at my church, and one thing that has really stood out to me is its emphasis on daily disciplines.
When life feels out of control, it's easy to spend the day... just freaking out.
But what if, instead of freaking out, we broke the problem down into tiny disciplines that we intentionally try to master each day?
Things like:
- Getting up on time.
- Making the bed.
- Keeping my room clean.
- Eating a healthy breakfast.
- Going for a run or getting in a hard workout.
- Dressing for success.
- Identifying five critical tasks that:
- Strengthen a personal relationship (a phone call, coffee, or lunch).
- Teach me something new.
- Challenge me to grow.
- Build a stronger foundation for me and my family.
- Are rooted in genuine love and real care—not just checking a box or satisfying someone's request.
- Sharing your knowledge by writing, teaching, or encouraging someone else.
- Eating a healthy lunch.
- Drinking enough water.
- Remembering to have fun and make someone laugh.
- Helping someone around me with something important.
- Putting the shopping cart back.
- Being kind to a stranger.
- Eating a healthy dinner.
- Spending quality time with my family.
- Ending the day in prayer, thanking God for everything He has given me.
None of these things seem extraordinary on their own. In fact, most of them seem almost too small to matter.
But that's the point.
Character isn't usually built in the big moments. It's built in the small decisions we make every single day.
Those tiny disciplines begin to stack on top of one another. Days become weeks. Weeks become months. Before long, you realize your life isn't changing because of one dramatic event—it's changing because of hundreds of faithful, intentional choices.
Don't underestimate the power of small acts done consistently. Make your list. Live it intentionally. Then watch what God does through those tiny daily disciplines.
