The Uber Driver and the Millionare

The Uber Driver and the Millionare

One of my most successful friends came to visit me unexpectedly.

It’s funny—I met him back when he was still in college, before he had built anything. Since then, he’s experienced the kind of wild success most people only dream about. But anyone who’s seen that level of success up close knows—it’s wild in every sense. A roller coaster with incredible highs and some very real, very scary lows.

What makes this friend remarkable isn’t just what he achieved—it’s who he remained.

Despite the extreme ups and downs, he stayed calm. Approachable. Steady.
He was the same guy when he was up as he was when he was down.

In my career, I’ve met a lot of people who ride those waves—and very few come out unchanged. Success and failure both have a way of reshaping people, sometimes pulling them into dark places. But the guy sitting across from me at lunch was the same person I met years ago: genuine, grounded, and kind.

And it is all because he knows who God is.

Over lunch, we talked about Egypt, Moses… and “the desert of the down.”

Would we willingly choose the desert… if it meant being closer to God?
We really connected on the positive values of the desert experience.

As we walked around town eating ice cream, talking about our faith journeys, it struck me how simple it all felt—an Uber driver and a millionaire just sharing a meal, fully present in the moment.

As he left, another thought hit me:

There is someone else who is the same when He is up and the same when He was down.

The same yesterday as he is today.

And His name is Jesus!

Happy Easter!
